Campus Computing Information
For Incoming Students

Our recommendations are updated annually to reflect the evolving minimum requirements of computers in a modern university. While computers of lower power may be usable in some situations, they are not generally recommended. Some disciplines may have unique technology needs. For example, graphics or video intensive disciplines may require larger HD storage and more RAM. Personal computer use on campus as well as all of our computing facilities are governed by the University's Appropriate Use Policy. We expect all incoming students to become familiar with this policy which is available at: http://www.humboldt.edu/~its/planning/policy/aup.shtml

Advanced information technology is very important at Humboldt State University. Nearly every discipline uses computers that support sophisticated data analysis, word processing and graphics. Although no program at HSU currently requires individuals to own their own computer, we consider one an indispensable tool for students allowing them to acquire competence in technologies that are shaping every profession and vocation as well as public life. Our most recent survey supports this by showing that more than 80% of our students own a computer. Students who do have their own computers enjoy clear benefits. At the most basic level, a personal computer is a tremendous tool that can facilitate learning. It enables the student to:

  • have increased access to University Services, including access to the library and smart classrooms from home
  • send electronic messages to instructors and turn in assignments
  • improve critical technology skills
  • extend credit earning possibilities
  • experience more opportunities for active learning by promoting interaction and collaboration on projects
  • gain 24 hour access to the Internet with the Resnet connections in the residence halls or individual Internet providers off campus
The HSU Bookstore is able to provide current generation personal computers obtainable at the lowest possible price anywhere. Only HSU students, faculty and staff are eligible to purchase personal computers and software through the HSU Bookstore at this special pricing.

Beginning January 1, 2005, California State Law requires us to collect a fee
